Information on getting a new career is easy to get, yet making the leap requires a degree of determination and planning.
And before you make the decision, it’s best to get yourself organised and draw up a personal career plan.
Importantly, as the current employment could be hard going for the next couple of years, it’s wise getting your plan sorted out as soon as you can. You don’t want to find that the job you felt was secure and long last-lasting, suddenly turns out to be a candidate for redundancy and that getting a new career is a forced priority.
Because once you’ve been handed a polite letter telling you that you and your job are no longer needed, that’s not the best time to think about getting a new career. With the job market in a state of flux, it’s now more than ever the time to get ready for a career change.
And if you think well hey, I like my current career, why should I think about getting a new career, then bear in mind that some careers throughout the global worldwide downturn are going to be more resilient than others. If you’re in a sector which is going to go through the doldrums – banking, insurance, retail car sales etc – then a career change might be the best idea.
Right, so you are determined on getting a new career. Start by getting your personal career plan ready. Start by making a list of your strengths and weaknesses – a personal SWOT analysis if you like. List your Strengths; Weaknesses (be honest with yourself here, as a bit of soul-searching will do you the world of good); Opportunities (what good news can you see on the horizon); and, finally, Threats (who, or what is out there that might put a stop to your plans).
Once you’ve done a bit of self-analysis, think about your current career and think hard about getting a new career and your personality profile. What gets you out of bed in the morning, what drives you on and what are your key interests in life? And just what would your ideal career be. And think wildly for a bit. In an ideal world, what would your ideal job involve? Don’t immediately think about salary, location and personal pension plans. Think selfishly, even just for a bit.
Okay, getting a new career takes a bit of time and patience, but it’s all worth it in the end.
